Mllicent Johnnie is a Star on the Rise
Millicent Johnnie is the consummate
professional; in her approach, in her planning, and in the execution of her
work. Millicent, a native of Lafayette,
Louisiana, earned both, her BFA and MFA in Dance at the prestigious dance
program at Florida State University. Millicent currently teaches dance at SMU
University is Dallas, TX. She has served on the faculty at Dillard University
in New Orleans, Louisiana after her touring as a resident choreographer and
rehearsal director for the Urban Bush Women in New York City.
Millicent has been able
to place her indelible print on a number of fascinating projects as a
choreographer. Her unique style and inherent ability to lucidly interpret and
express music through dance has placed her in a class all her own. She is
without question one of those individuals that is only bound by the limits of
her imagination and from this writer's evaluation, there are no limits.
Millicent’s choreography
has been featured on Cleo Parker-Robinson Dance, The Urban Bush Women, Hubbard
Street II, Sunshine Network, The Katrina Project, ESPN, and more. She has been
recognized as a guest artist at the Tougaloo College - Mississippi Hip Hop Youth Festival, University
of Tennessee – Knoxville and more.
She has formal training
in Abada Capoeira, while in Capoeira Brazil and at the Escola de Dansa in historic
Salvador, Bahia. Millicent has been able to merge her informal and formal
American dance training in Hip Hop with the Brazilian Martial Art Capoeira
along with some Caribbean influenced movements to create a hybrid that is truly
her own vocabulary that speaks powerfully and fluently.
Millicent has recently
indicated that she is ready to take her career to the next level. She wants to
get involved in the production side of things. This could prove to be an
incredible move on her part as it will allow her to have more creative freedom
and input. If she approaches this next phase of her career with the same
passion, commitment and intensity that she has displayed up to this point, her
success is inevitable.
